The year-long NELA School Leadership Internship was designed to develop NELA fellows strong interpersonal relationships, diagnose student learning and effective teaching, model reflective practice, and master leadership skills and dispositions that support school improvement efforts. During the 2011-2012 school year, I had the opportunity to spend one to two days per week as an intern at Hollister Elementary School. My job was to learn as much as possible from my mentor principal, Carla Amason. My days were filled with walk-throughs, teacher evaluations and observations. As a new assistant principal intern, one of my first official duties was to introduce myself to the staff at Hollister.
Next, I completed "The School Profile Assignment", which allowed me to fully examine Hollister. It was important to learn all I could about the Hollister community to help inform leaderhip practices. Components of this assignment included mapping school assets, evaluating the school's opennes to change, examining the school culture nd identifying areas of needed improvement.

Importantly, I had the opportunity to give back to Hollister. The Internship Project began in the fall and spanned the entire internship year. With input from my mentor principal, Carla Amason, I used the information from the entry profile and other data to design a school improvement project. The population targeted was Kindergarten. Hollister has two kindergarten classess. I worked closely with these classes to help with teaching vocabulary in a systematic way to hopefully increase student's reading ability.

Presenting our Problem of Practice
On Saturday, April 21, 2012, we had the opportunity to present our "Problem of Practice" and the results of our evaluation at a poster presentation. Members of NELA Cohorts I and II, as well as family members and school and district leaders in the area, joined us to learn more about our internship projects and their impact on our schools and students.
